What is your Skin Type? Take Our Skin-Type Test

What is your Skin Type? Take Our Skin-Type Test

What is your Skin Type? Take our Skin-Type Test What is Your Skin Type? It’s confusing, right?  Choosing the right skin care starts with knowing your skin type. Sounds simple? And it is…  if you know how to determine what skin classification you fall into. And that’s where its easy to get a little lost. There is just so much advice and so many opinions out there, it’s easy to become confused and uncertain. That’s why we’ve put together this simple “how to guide “ helping you to identify where you stand in the skin care stakes.  By breaking it down into simple categories and steps you’ll have your skin care type identified.  From there your skincare system choices are straightforward. Did you know that there are only 3 different skin types? Despite what the so called experts, influencers and sellers of cosmetics may try and tell you  - there are only 3 true skin types – Dry, Oily and Combination. Acne, sensitivity and hormonal breakouts do not determine your skin type. Conditions like acne, rosacea, hormonal breakouts and sensitivity  are issues that can happen to any skin .  These conditions can come and go no matter what type of skin you have.  (If you suffer from any of these issues -jump into chat with us or leave a message and we can talk you through how to deal with them effectively and easily.) Take the Skin-Type Test Now that we know that there are only three skin types it’s a fairly easy process to decide which type you have.  Of course your skin classification can change over time.  Most skin tends to dry out as we age .  So don’t be surprised if you find that your once oily or combination skin changes to dry as you mature.       1. Wash Your Face To start, wash your face with a gentle milk cleanser – (something like our Herbal  Cleansing Milk with Rose Geranium)  then gently pat it dry. Note do not use a foaming facial wash or anything  that creates bubbles on the face as these will artificially dry your skin and likely give you a false result.       2. Wait 30 minutes After 30 minutes look at your skin in the mirror under good lighting. Note how your skin looks, as well as how it feels.      3. Evaluate the Results  Now lets looks at the different skin types and see where you fit in. Dry, Dull Looking Skin? If your skin looks dull – feels dry – even tight in places, then you more than likely have dry skin Shiny All Over? If your skin looks shiny all over and feels comfortable without any areas that feel tight or look dull, then you more than likely have oily skin. Dry Cheeks with a Shiny T-Zone? If your cheeks look and feel dry and your T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) are tending towards shiny/oily then you more than likely have what we would call combination skin. 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Face

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Face

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Face You'd think that washing your face was the simplest of things to get right.  Yet you may be surprised at how many people are doing it wrong! Here are the 5 cleansing mistakes to avoid when washing your face 1. Don't Over Cleanse: The general rule is wash your face with a suitable cleanser before you sleep and wash with tepid water when you wake. Washing more often will strip the natural oils from your skin which could cause your skin to become  dry and more sensitive. Use Moon Haven's Herbal Cleansing Milk with rose geranium for mature, dry and sensitive skin or Herbal Cleansing Gel with Bergamot for unbalanced, acne prone and oil skin. 2.Don't Use a Foaming Facial Wash The bubbles in a foaming facial wash strip away all your natural oils in your skin- leaving it feeling tight, dry and exposed The natural oils produced by your skin are precious.  Not only do they naturally moisturise your skin, they form part of the body's protective barrier.  3. Don't Scrub When washing your wash there is no need to scrub your skin.  Treat your skin as if it were a baby's.  Gentle soothing strokes.... pat dry with a soft towel is what is required. Scrubbing your skin, as if you were sandpapering, will only cause mini abrasions, gouges and sensitisations.  4. Don't Use Hot or Cold Water Washing your face with hot water will open up the capillaries (blood vessels) near the surface of our skin.  The heat may even cause some to break creating mini bleeds just under the surface of the skin. On the other hand cold water can close the pores on your skin so that any impurities are not released causing clogged and blocked pores. Warm tepid water is the way to go when washing your face. Your pores remain open, the blood vessels intact and your skin remains comfortable.  5. Don't Use a Washcloth/Face Cloth/ Face Brush etc There is so much conflicting advice out there on how to cleanse your skin.  All manner of tools, scrubbers and cloths are available that we're told are invaluable for skin health. But let me tell you... they're not needed ...in fact and in most cases... can do more harm than good. As we read above scrubbing the skin is often counter productive.  It stresses already stressed skin. Cloths and brushes can harbor nasty bugs, yeasts, fungi, bacteria which can infect your skin - especially if it has been broken. As long as you wash your hands first...your finger tips with your favourite cleanser and a little tepid water are perfect for applying and washing away the dirt, dust and daily grime from your face. I hope this information is helpful. Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin

Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin

Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin Using essential oils on your skin effectively and safely isn’t difficult but it can be a little confusing. So we've put together this handy guide to using essential oils on your body. Never use undiluted essential oil on your skin First things first - ALWAYS dilute essential oils when applying them to your skin or scalp.  Undiluted essential oil on the skin can potentially cause sensitisation and severe skin reactions in susceptible people. I have known of clients who have splashed lavender essential oil around like it was a cologne only to find that at some point in time their skin starts to react, becoming sensitized or developing eczema like rashes. I have a personal theory that we all have a lifetime limit or threshold for different substances in our lives.  Once that limit has been reached then sensitisation occurs on every subsequent exposure. The key to using essential oils safely & effectively is to use the correct dilution for the person & situation Download Your Essential Oil Dilution Guide For this reason I prefer to err on the side of caution and recommend that essential oils are diluted when applied to the skin. We have written a simple essential oil dilution guide for skin applications.  Click here to get your copy Warmest regards, Leonie - moonhaven's aromatherapist, founder & creator of good things This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. Use you soap to do what it does best...clean your body - then let it drain well between uses. Leaving your precious bars of soap to soak will result in a wasteful mess of soapy sludge. The drier your soap gets between uses the longer it will last. or  one of our easy to hang and handle Eco Soap Saver Bags 3. Store your soap on an open soap dish like this eco bamboo soap saver rack - it'll help the soap  to dry between uses and remain wonderful from full bar to soap slither. 4. Use a wash cloth, soap mesh or one of our Eco Soap Saver Bags - this way you'll get even more soap miles out of each bar. BONUS- The  eco soap saver  bag also serves as a gently scrubby wash cloth which you can hang over the tap to dry out between uses. 5. Is Bar Soap Good for Your Skin?

Is Bar Soap Good for Your Skin?

Is Soap Good for Your Skin? How many times have you heard- Using a non -soap cleanser is better for your skin? (think body washes, liquid soaps etc) For me -  nothing could be further from the truth! You see, if your skin is compromised, dry, itchy, scaly damaged... then a good, hand made, natural cold pressed soap - used correctly-  is just what you skin needs.  So how can I back up these wild claims? That's easy. 20+ years of experience   Over the past 20 odd years, my team and I have helped our wonderful moon haven clients reclaim the skin that they were meant to have, using our simple systems which always includes our very own natural, cold process soap. Each encounter with our moonies has proven to me time and time again that using great cold process soap is a wonderful, non -toxic way to cleanse your body.  It's even more beneficial for damaged, compromised skin. BUT And this is a huge BUT... you must use the right soap! Use the correct type of soap You see all cleansers, no matter if they are liquid detergents, solid, mass produced or gentle to the skin cold process soaps aim to remove oil and dirt from your skin. That is their job. So our aim when formulating a good cleanser is to remove the dirt and leave as much of the natural oils in the skin as possible.  And that is how we have formulated Moon Haven's range of natural cold process soaps. How Do We Make Skin Friendly Soap Bars? We use extra skin-friendly oils - We ensure that our bars retain just enough extra free botanical oils so that the skin is not left dry, irritated and dehydrated.  In fact your skin should feel better than when you went into the shower! Our soaps are formulated and handcrafted so that each bar contains its complete natural compliment of emollient, moisturising glycerine.  Amazingly this amazing ingredient is removed from mass produced, supermarket soaps to be sold of to skin care companies to use in their moisturisers and serums! We use a high percentage (over 65%) of skin conditioning botanical oils in our soap.  You see olive and rice bran oils contain some of the most skin loving, conditioning, anti-inflammatory long chain fatty acids available...and these convert into skin living, conditioning anti-inflammatory soaps!  Our Three Year Soap Formula Our soap formula didn't come out of a book.  We didn't buy a recipe. Nor did we have someone formulate it. Our soap formula evolved.  It took three years of experimentation, trialling on ourselves, family and friends -  tweaking and reformulating to the point where we  now have a beautifully gently cleansing bar for everyone (and every skin) enjoy.  Which Moon Haven soap is your favourite? 3 Essential oils for Better Sleep

3 Essential oils for Better Sleep

3 Best Essential Oils for Sleep When sleep feels elusive, many of us reach for natural helpers to calm the mind and prepare the body for rest. At Moon Haven, we often turn to three beautiful essential oils: Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana), and Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) to create a bedtime ritual that soothes, relaxes, and gently invites sleep Setting the Scene for Rest Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Lavender Oil isn’t technically a soporific (something that directly induces sleep), but it is one of the most effective oils for creating a restful environment. Its calming, balancing properties help reduce nervous tension, slow racing thoughts, and prepare your body to wind down. Think of Lavender as dimming the lights and drawing the curtains, it helps set the scene for sleep. The Gentle Sleep Inducer Sweet Marjoram (Origanum majorana) Sweet Marjoram Oil goes one step further. Traditionally known for its ability to relax the nervous system and muscles. Sweet Marjoram has soporific qualities, meaning it actively encourages sleep. It’s often used for restlessness, helping the body drift into slumber more easily. A Comforting Night-time Ally Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) Roman Chamomile Oil is another gentle soporific. Its sweet, apple-like scent is deeply soothing, especially for people who feel wound up or unsettled at night. Roman Chamomile is often used for children and adults alike, calming the body while offering emotional comfort. Bringing Them Together: Deep Sleep Pulse Point Potion While each of these oils is powerful on its own, blending them together creates a beautifully balanced synergy. That’s why we crafted our Deep Sleep Pulse Point Potion. A simple, ready to use, roll-on blend containing Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, and Roman Chamomile. With just a dab on your  temples, jaw line and at the base of the neckjust as you turn out the lights you can enjoy the calming, sleep-inducing benefits of all three oils in one handy potion. (more details on our Deep Sleep Pulse Point Potion page) Sleep is not something we can force, it’s a state we gently invite. By setting the stage with Lavender and leaning on the soporific qualities of Sweet Marjoram and Roman Chamomile, you can create a calming nightly ritual that helps your body naturally ease into rest. Natural Spring Allergy Relief: Aromatherapy & Herbal Remedies That Work

Natural Spring Allergy Relief: Aromatherapy & Herbal Remedies That Work

Natural Spring Allergy Relief: Aromatherapy & Herbal Remedies That Work Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year – the warmth returning, flowers blooming everywhere, and that fresh energy in the air. But for so many of us, the beauty of spring can come with some unwelcome guests: sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and skin that just won't settle down. After years of spring sniffles and itchy skin affecting our Moon Haven family, we've discovered some gentle, natural ways to help ease these seasonal struggles. We thought it was the perfect time to share what's worked for so many of us. Quick Spring Allergy Support at a Glance Here's how each of these can help support you naturally through spring: 🌿 Stuffy sinuses & hay fever: Breathe Easy Pulse Point Potion to help open airways naturally   🌼 Itchy, irritated skin: Calendula Salve for gentle, soothing relief   🌱 Persistent skin flare-ups: Chickweed & Plantain Salve to calm hot, scratchy skin   ✨ Ongoing skin support: Eczema & Psoriasis Pack for complete, gentle care Why Spring Can Be Tricky for Our Bodies As all those beautiful trees, grasses, and flowers release their pollen, our bodies sometimes overreact – thinking this natural pollen is something to fight off. This can trigger: - Sneezing, runny noses, and that stuffy feeling - Itchy, watery eyes that just won't quit   - Exhaustion from poor sleep (thanks, blocked sinuses!) - Skin reactions like hives, eczema flare-ups, and general itchiness Over the years, we've found that using gentle, natural approaches can bring such effective relief. Supporting Your Breathing with Simple Aromatherapy 🌿Breathe Easy Pulse Point Potion This blend has been so helpful during spring season. We created this specifically to help open airways and provide quick relief when that familiar congestion sets in. Many of our Moonies keep one in their handbag and use it throughout the day – just a gentle swipe on temples, wrists, or carefully under the nose (well away from the eyes). The refreshing aroma helps breathing feel so much easier, and it's small enough to take anywhere. Gentle Care for Allergy-Irritated Skin Spring allergies don't just affect our breathing – they often show up on our skin too. If you're dealing with hives, rashes, or general itchiness (or if you're prone to eczema or psoriasis), here's what many of us reach for: 🌼Calendula Salve Calendula has been used for ages to calm irritated skin, and our salve is wonderfully gentle when hives or rashes appear. Many find it takes that sharp edge off itchiness and gives skin the chance to settle down naturally. 🌱 Chickweed & Plantain Salve For really persistent itchiness – especially when skin feels hot and scratchy – this salve is a favourite. These two herbs are nature's comforters, cooling and soothing without any harshness. Just a small tin in your bag means relief is always within reach. Complete Support for Sensitive Skin If you're someone whose eczema or psoriasis tends to flare with pollen season, having a complete routine can make all the difference. Our Eczema & Psoriasis Pack brings together four of our most skin-supportive products to help: - Soothe active flare-ups gently - Deeply hydrate dry, distressed skin   - Calm the irritation that often comes with allergies It provides consistent, gentle care for your skin through spring's unpredictable changes. A Gentle Note While we love sharing what's worked for our Moon Haven family, these natural supports aren't meant to replace medical advice. If your allergies or skin conditions are severe, please do seek guidance from your healthcare professional. What we can share is what's worked for many of us and the feedback from thousands of Moonies who've found relief in these gentle, natural remedies. Embracing Spring Together As we welcome spring, we hope you know that you don't have to simply endure hay fever or irritated skin. With the right natural supports, this can truly be a season of joy and renewal. We hope you find the natural support that works for you – whether through a little Pulse Point Potion for quick relief, a soothing salve for your skin, or a complete routine that nurtures you through the season. Best Essential Oils for Stress: A Clinical Aromatherapist's Guide to Stressing Less

Best Essential Oils for Stress: A Clinical Aromatherapist's Guide to Stressing Less

Best Essential Oils for Stress: A Clinical Aromatherapist's Guide to Stressing Less  Discover the most effective essential oils for melting away stress and tension, backed by 25+ years of clinical aromatherapy experience  After more than two decades of formulating aromatherapy blends and helping thousands of our Moonies find natural relief from stress, I've identified five essential oils that consistently deliver profound calming effects. As someone who turned to aromatherapy during my own health struggles with fibromyalgia, I understand first hand how overwhelming stress can feel - and how the right essential oils can be absolute lifesavers.  At a Glance - Your Natural Stress-Busting Arsenal:  • Rose Geranium - Balances stress hormones at the source, perfect for work pressure and hormonal stress   • Bergamot - Lifts anxiety while calming nerves, ideal for racing thoughts and worry   • Clary Sage - Brings deep relaxation and mental clarity during overwhelming moments   • Patchouli - Grounds scattered energy and quiets mental chatter, excellent for stress-related insomnia   • Ylang Ylang - Soothes physical stress symptoms like rapid heartbeat and tension  Why These Five Essential Oils Stand Above the Rest  When stress hits, your nervous system goes into over drive. Your heart races, your mind spins, and your body holds tension in ways that canleave you feeling completely depleted. The essential oils I'm sharing today don't just mask stress symptoms - they work at a cellular level to restore balance to your nervous system and bring you back to a state of calm centeredness.  1. Rose Geranium: The Hormone Harmonizer Botanical Name: Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum  Rose Geranium tops my list because it addresses stress at its root - your hormonal system. This beautiful oil works directly on the adrenal cortex, helping to regulate cortisol and other stress hormones that can leave you feeling frazzled and overwhelmed.  What makes Rose Geranium particularly special is its dual action. While it's calming your nervous system, it's also providing gentle emotional support, making it perfect for stress that stems from hormonal fluctuations, work pressure, or relationship challenges. The sweet, rosy scent with herbal undertones creates an immediate sense of comfort and safety.  2. Bergamot: The Anxiety Lifter  Botanical Name: Citrus bergamia  Bergamot is pure magic for anxiety-driven stress. This gorgeous citrus oil has the remarkable ability to simultaneously uplift your spirits while calming nervous tension - a combination that's incredibly rare in the aromatherapy world.  Within minutes of inhaling Bergamot, you'll notice that tight knot in your chest beginning to loosen. It's particularly effective for stress that manifests as worry, racing thoughts, or that overwhelming feeling of being unable to cope. The light citrusy notes with a hint of floral freshness literally brighten your mood while grounding your nervous system.  3. Clary Sage: The Deep Relaxer  Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea  When stress has you feeling scattered and unable to think clearly, Clary Sage is your ally. This softly herbaceous oil is deeply calming to the nervous system and brings remarkable mental clarity during overwhelming moments.  Clary Sage is particularly brilliant for stress connected to major life transitions, hormonal changes, or when you're feeling completely out of control. It helps create space between you and your stressors, allowing you to respond rather than react. The deeply relaxing properties make it perfect for evening use when stress is keeping you awake.  4. Patchouli: The Grounding Anchor  Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin  Patchouli is what I call a "grounding" oil - it literally helps anchor you when your mind is spinning and your thoughts are scattered. This deep, earthy oil works on a profound level to quiet mental chatter and bring you back to the present moment.  When stress has you feeling like you're floating away from yourself, Patchouli brings you back to earth. It's particularly effective for stress-related insomnia, as it creates this beautiful sense of being settled and centered. The rich, earthy aroma becomes more complex and beautiful with age, making it a treasured addition to any stress-relief arsenal.  5. Ylang Ylang: The Heart Soother  Botanical Name: Cananga odorata  Ylang Ylang is liquid tranquility for when stress manifests physically in your body. This exotic floral oil has been used for centuries to slow a racing heart and calm an overactive nervous system.  If your stress shows up as rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, or physical tension, Ylang Ylang provides almost immediate relief. The lush, calming floral depth literally melts tension away, making it perfect for those moments when stress feels overwhelming and all-consuming.  The Science Behind These Stress-Busting Oils  Each of these oils contains specific chemical compounds that interact with your limbic system - the part of your brain that processes emotions and stress responses. When you inhale these aromatic molecules, they travel directly to your brain via your olfactory system, triggering immediate physiological changes that promote calm and relaxation.  Unlike synthetic fragrances or pharmaceutical interventions, these pure plant essences work with your body's natural healing mechanisms, supporting rather than overriding your nervous system's ability to find balance.  How to Use These Oils for Maximum Stress Relief  Diffusion: Add 3-6 drops to your oil burner or diffuser  Inhalation: Place 1-2 drops on a tissue and breathe deeply  Bath: Mix 5 drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil before adding to warm bath water  Topical: Always dilute in a carrier oil (2.5% dilution for body, 1% for face) Our Stress Less Essential Oil Blend: Born from Personal Need I didn't create our Stress Less Essential Oil Blend in a laboratory or as a business strategy - it was born from my own desperate need for calm during one of the most challenging periods of my life.  Back in 1999, I was living with the daily reality of fibromyalgia, working long hours, and carrying a heavy load of family responsibilities. The stress was overwhelming, and I found myself reaching for different essential oils throughout the day, trying to find something -anything - that would help me breathe again and find stillness amidst the chaos.  I remember the exact moment I knew I needed to create something more comprehensive. I was standing in my kitchen laboratory, surrounded by individual oil bottles, and I thought, "I just need something that will help me find peace." Clary Sage was my starting point- it's such a deeply relaxing oil. From there, I reached for Bergamot and Petitgrain to bring lightness, and Lavender, Patchouli, Rose Geranium, and Ylang Ylang to round it all out into something that just felt... peaceful.  What began as my personal remedy during a time when I desperately needed support soon became one of our most beloved blends. Over 20 years later, our Moonies consistently tell us that Stress Less is their go-to for finding calm in life's overwhelming moments. You'll now find it not just in our essential oil range, but in our bubble bath and bath salts too - it's that effective.  The result is a synergistic blend that addresses stress from multiple angles - hormonal, emotional, mental, and physical. Each oil enhances the others, creating a complex aromatic profile that's greater than the sum of its parts, born from real need and proven through decades of helping people find their calm. Whether you choose to work with these oils individually or experience their combined power in our Stress Less blend, you're giving yourself a natural, effective tool for managing stress and reclaiming your sense of peace and balance.   Remember, a little goes a long way with pure essential oils. Always patch test before topical use, and consult with a qualified aromatherapist if you have specific health concerns.  Find Your Stress Less Favorites This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. The Simple, No Fuss SkinCare for Men

The Simple, No Fuss SkinCare for Men

2 Step - No Fuss SkinCare for Men Let's be honest – most blokes aren't interested in a 12-step skincare routine that takes longer than their morning coffee. But here's the thing: your skin works hard for you every day, and it deserves better than a splash of water and hope for the best. After 25 years of formulating natural skincare, we've learned that men's skin has its own unique needs, and the good news is, meeting those needs doesn't have to be complicated. Why Men's Skin is Different (And Why That Matters) Thicker skin: Men's skin is roughly 25% thicker than women's, which means it can handle more, but it also means it needs proper care to stay healthy. More oil production: Higher testosterone levels mean more sebaceous gland activity – that's why many men struggle with oiliness and enlarged pores well into their adult years. Daily shaving stress: Regular shaving creates micro-abrasions and can lead to irritation, ingrown hairs, and sensitivity. Less maintenance awareness: Most men simply weren't taught skincare basics, so they're starting from scratch. The beauty of understanding these differences is that we can create a targeted approach that actually works – without the fuss. The 1 Minute No-Fuss SkinCare Solution After years of helping thousands of our male Moonies find their groove, we've discovered that the most successful skincare routine for men is refreshingly simple: cleanse and moisturise. That's it. Morning and evening (60 seconds each): Wet your face with warm water. Lightly lather the Tea Tree-T Cleansing Bar – wet your hand, then swipe it once or twice across the soap. This gives you just enough lather for your face (you don’t need much). Gently massage the lather over your face to cleanse. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry. While your skin is still slightly damp, apply a pea-sized amount of Nature's Own Moisture Lotion. 76 & Still Getting Compliments "I have been using this product for many years. I receive many favourable comments regarding my youthful skin. I am 76 years of age .. I’m happy to receive the compliments.   Lol" ROD B. Perth WA Why this combo works brilliantly: Tea Tree-T Cleansing Bar delivers natural clarification with organic green clay, antibacterial action from tea tree oil, and balancing properties that prevent over-drying. One bar lasts 2-3 months with daily use. Nature's Own Moisture Lotion is unscented, lightweight, absorbs quickly without greasiness, and works on face, hands, and any dry spots. Pleased I made the change "I was sceptical about switching from my usual face wash, but this soap has completely changed my skin. No more midday shine, and my wife says I look healthier!" – Mark S.A. For the Bearded Blokes: Level Up Your Game If you're sporting facial hair, here's your bonus step: add our Beard Oil to your routine. Just a few drops worked through your beard will: Tame the wild: Softens even the scruffiest beard Soothe the skin: Reduces itch and irritation underneath Add subtle appeal: Our signature Casablanca scent is quietly irresistible "Love the beard oil. I like how light it feels in the beard and the discrete scent. Also love that it's natural and that I can give my kids big chin cuddles without irritating their skin." – Louis, WA The Bottom Line Good skincare for men doesn't need to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. With the right products and a consistent two-minute routine, you can have healthier, more comfortable skin that looks and feels better every day. Remember, this isn't about vanity – it's about taking care of the skin you're in. Your future self will thank you for starting today. Ready to simplify your skincare game? Our Cleanse & Moisturise for Men combo takes the guesswork out of getting started, and like all our products, it comes with our 100% happiness guarantee. Because looking after yourself should be straightforward, effective, and completely hassle-free.                                           🌿 Laura, Leonie, Chris & the Moon Haven Team Take It Up a Notch: CHECK OUT OUR MOST POPULAR CONTENT What is your Skin Type? Make this blend for winter warmth

Make this blend for winter warmth

Make this blend for winter warmth Leonie here, writing to you from my little formulation corner of the cottage. I've been working with our Body Rub Trio to make a really gorgeous muscle warming blend - see the recipe below. But first I want to talk about why these oils and why this blend. Sometimes Our Aching Bodies Need Comfort I'm sure you know how much I believe in the synergy of combining different natural approaches. And while our beloved St John's Wort & Calendula Rub works beautifully with its anti-inflammatory properties, sometimes our bodies need a different kind of relief - the warming, circulation-boosting power that only certain essential oils can provide. That's why I chose these three essential oils for the trio: 🔥 Ginger - The warming powerhouse (yes, it smells a bit like wet socks at first sniff 😱, but don't let that fool you - it's incredibly effective! Give it ten minutes and its true ginger nature begins to show itself. 🌿 Eucalyptus - Increases circulation and helps warming oils penetrate deeper ❄️ Peppermint - Helps distract pain receptors So now that you know why... here's the blend Warming Muscle Rub Recipe Ingredients: •    10 drops Ginger Essential Oil •    8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil •    8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil •    20ml Fractionated Coconut Oil Method:  1.    In a 20ml glass bottle, combine all essential oils.  2.    Top up with fractionated coconut oil and shake gently to blend.  To Use: Massage a few drops into affected areas as needed.  Important: Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after application - you really don't want this warming blend getting near delicate skin or membranes! Hint:  Many of our Moonies alternate between this warming blend and our St John’s Wort & Calendula Rub - the combination is incredibly effective. And of course, individually these oils are incredibly versatile. Eucalyptus is great for congestion, Peppermint for headaches and Ginger for digestive support  For me - I wouldn't be without them... I hope you get to play with these remarkable essential oils - particularly  the 'wet sock' ginger oil - it truly improves with time.  Just give it ten minutes for its true nature to show itself! From our cottage to you, with love, 🧡 Leonie (moon haven's aromatherapist & founder)  P.S. I can't stress this enough - always wash your hands thoroughly after using this rub formula. The Jar That Started It All…

The Jar That Started It All…

The Jar That Started It All… I want to share the story behind it all – because it's quite personal, and it's actually how Moon Haven began. When I'd had enough Back in 1998, I was really struggling. I'd been dealing with terrible muscle pain for years, and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. Finally I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Their solution? A bunch of pills that made me feel like a zombie – muscle relaxants, antidepressants, heavy painkillers. That wasn't going to work for me. Some days I couldn't get out of bed. Walking to the letterbox was beyond me. And sleep? I'd wake up every few hours with pain all through my body. I'd had enough. If conventional medicine couldn't help me, I was going to have to help myself. Back to my roots Luckily, I've always been drawn to natural solutions. As a kid, I had a chemistry set and turned our laundry into my laboratory (much to my parents' amusement!). So I started researching herbs and essential oils, connecting with aromatherapists and herbalists around the world. After months of experimenting with different combinations, I finally created something that actually worked. A simple salve that could take my pain away for hours at a time. Made it right there in our kitchen – which had pretty much become my laboratory by then. Two heroes Two special herbs made all the difference: St John's Wort  –These sunny yellow flowers are powerful nerve soothers. Unlike menthol-based rubs that just distract from pain, St John's Wort actually helps calm overactive nerve pathways. Think of it as nature's way of turning down the volume on pain signals. Calendula – Our beautiful golden calendula flowers are amazing anti-inflammatory healers. They help soothe irritated tissues and support your body's natural healing process. We grow our own here at Moon Haven – I still get excited every time I see them blooming in our garden. Combined with eight carefully chosen essential oils (no harsh menthol here!), these herbs created something I'd never experienced before – real, lasting relief. From kitchen creation to Moon Haven We originally called it "Achy Breaky Rub" because that Billy Ray Cyrus song was everywhere back then! Word spread quickly among family and friends, and soon Eric (my late husband and Moon Haven's co-founder) and I were making batch after batch in our kitchen.   As Moon Haven grew, we changed the name to St John's Wort & Calendula Rub because we wanted the name to reflect the powerful herbs inside. Though many of our longtime Moonies still affectionately call it Achy Breaky! When you need extra support Sometimes the rub alone wasn't quite enough for really tough days. That's when I discovered that adding a drop or two of our Achy Breaky Essential Oil Blend on top gave it extra power. The combination is remarkable.   Still made the same way That little jar didn't just give me my life back – it gave birth to Moon Haven. Every product we've created since comes from the same approach: natural ingredients that actually work, made with genuine care. We still make it exactly the same way – infusing our own herbs, wildcrafting when we can, combining aromatherapy and herbalism in ways others don't. It's not just our most popular product. It's our founding story in a jar. How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces

How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces

How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces We’re often asked… "Can essential oils really help settle the household when everything feels like it’s spinning out of control?” At Moon Haven, we’ve watched the transformative power of scent work its gentle magic for decades — in homes bustling with children, in workplaces brimming with deadlines, and in our own cottage store where busy minds walk in and breathe a sigh of relief. Aromatherapy, when used with intention, can truly bring calm to chaos. Here’s how: The Scent - Emotion Connection Essential oils like Lavender, Sweet Orange, and Lemongrass interact with the limbic system – the emotional centre of the brain. Just a few deep breaths of the right blend can: lower heart rate reduce cortisol levels (our main stress hormone) and restore a sense of control It’s not just ‘woo-woo’ — it’s biology. Creating Calm Zones @ Home Whether it’s toddlers melting down, teens arguing over the remote, or the grown-ups stressing over bills, every household needs a sanctuary space. Here’s how our Moonies are doing it: Diffuser in the corner: A calming blend of Lavender or Sweet Orange helps ease the mood and reset the tone of the day. Bathroom bliss: A few drops of Rose Geranium or Lemongrass Oil on a washcloth during a warm shower turns cleansing into a grounding ritual. Pillow & linen mist: A spritz of our Dreamy Lavender Room Spray at bedtime tells your nervous system, “It’s time to let go.” No Diffuser? No Worries! You don’t need fancy gear to enjoy the calming benefits: A bowl of steaming water + a few drops of Lavender or Lemongrass = instant atmosphere shift A cotton ball with a drop of essential oil tucked into a pocket or desk drawer A dab of diluted oil on pulse points (our Relax Pulse Point Potion is perfect for this) Lemongrass: Cutting Through the Clutter One of our favourites for lifting emotional fog is Lemongrass Essential Oil. With its bright, citrusy scent, it’s perfect for those moments when you feel overwhelmed and scattered. Try it when: You’ve had a tense conversation and want to reset the energy in a room The household feels “stale” and heavy (a few drops in a DIY surface spray works wonders) You need a fresh start and a mental uplift without caffeine Rituals Over Routines Aromatherapy shines when it’s woven into the everyday. It helps transform the mundane into moments of intention and care: A drop of essential oil in a warm bowl of water while doing dishes Inhaling your favourite blend before opening your laptop Breathing deeply while applying moisturiser before bed These tiny rituals anchor us and give our nervous systems a break — even if it’s just for a few seconds. Final Thoughts from the Cottage In a world that rarely slows down, the simple act of stopping to breathe in calm can be revolutionary. Whether it’s the soft embrace of Lavender, the crisp clarity of Lemongrass, or the grounding depth of Vetiver — aromatherapy reminds us that peace isn’t out there somewhere… it starts within, right under our nose. What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care?

What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care?

What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care? I never thought that it would happen to me. Here I was away from Moon Haven, away from home and I had forgotten to pack my Anti Ageing Skin Care System AND my Moisture Cream with Rose Geranium. In fact I had left everything at home... and I mean EVERYTHING! So I thought-  oh well... a few days wont hurt me using something else on my skin. I couldn't have been more wrong! So off I went down to a nearby pharmacy and picked up what i thought was a good quality as-natural-as-possible moisturiser and cleanser for sensitive, dry skin.  They were a little pricey but I didn't want to compromise my skin for the sake of a few dollars. Day 1 Using the acquired skincare was ok...my skin was reasonably hydrated when I woke up that first morning. The cleanser was adequate but it did leave my face feeling a little tight.  I decided that I wouldn't use it again. At the end of the day my face felt warm, dry and uncomfortable. It was pink in places and my rosacea was starting flare. I applied more moisturiser which relieved the dryness for a few hours...but it didn't last. Days 2 and 3  I was constantly having to play moisturiser catch up with my skin.  and by Day 4 I knew that my skin was in trouble.  I woke with a pimple above my eyebrow and a painfull lump developing at the corner of my mouth. My skin was sensitised, warm to the touch and papery. I was breaking out and my skin was stressed. Thankfully, I was on my way home... and do you know what the first thing I did was? Smothered my face with Bionutrient gel mixed with our Age defying serum.  My skin soaked it up and started to relax... and even more importantly repair. Anti-Ageing Skincare System SKINCARE THAT HAPPENS WHEN WE MAKE SKINCARE FOR OURSELVES Your Price: : 100% NO-RISK MONEY BACK GUARANTEE Needless to say - the very first thing I will pack from now on is my skincare.  I don't want to go through that trial ever again. Learn & Focus Easier with a "Scent Anchor"

Learn & Focus Easier with a "Scent Anchor" Our Brains Love to Work Habitually Habits are the brains comfort zone and our aim when using Focus Pulse Point Potion is to create a habit around study, learning and retaining that knowledge. When you use Focus PPP every time you study the scent helps to remind your brain and mind that this is the time to study and learn.  And the essential oils in Focus PPP helps you to remember what you've learnt. Repetition is the Key Repeating this process often, helps to create a strong neural pathway.  This goes a long way towards establishing a learning habit that your brain not only recognises, but feels very comfortable doing.   Anchored Conditioned Response We call this an "anchored conditioned response." And the anchor - well it's the scent of the Focus Pulse Point Potion. In other words habitually using Focus PPP can help your brain and mind to get in the mood to study. How To Use Focus Pulse Point to Train Your Brain At the beginning of each learning, study, homework session or before an exam:   1. Get you learning space and study materials  ready to use. 2. Apply Focus Pulse Point Potion to your temples, jawline and hollow at the base of your neck. 3. Warming Muscle Rub Blend

Warming Muscle Rub Blend

Warming Muscle Rub Blend There are two main  approaches to dealing with muscle and body pain Soothe, calm and reduce inflammation - this is the approach taken with Moon Haven's St John's Wort & Calendula Rub Counter-irritate the area, excite the muscles and in turn, confuse the pain signals in the nerves to register something other than pain. This is the way liniments and mentholated sports rubs tend to work. And we agree - there are times when a counterirritant, warming muscle rub like this can be comforting. This easy to make formulation is wonderful to use on old stubborn injuries and muscle pain. There are 3 Essential Oils that do this well: Ginger Pure Essential Oil's warming and anti-inflammatory qualities help soothe tired, aching muscles and joints. Eucalyptus Essential Oil is noted for its analgesic properties ( helps to relieve pain) , as well as for its ability to assist with congestion and respiratory issues Interestingly, eucalyptus leaves were used by indigenous Australians as a poultice to help relieve the muscle and joint pain of arthritis. Peppermint Pure Essential Oil (Mentha arvensis) is a wonderful oil to use in a muscle rub as it contains around 80% menthol. Menthol is known as a counterirritant. It works by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm. These feelings on the skin distract you from feeling the aches/pains deeper in your muscles and joints.  Combining all three essential oils into one rub makes for a very potent concoction. Here is a suggested formula to make at home. Warming Muscle Rub Blend In a 50 ml glass bottle mix: 10 drops Ginger Essential Oil 8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil 8 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil Top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil. How to use: Massage a few drops into the affected area. Apply as often as needed Don't forget to wash your hands immediately after  - You really wouldn't want any of this blend to get into and delicate areas. In case of irritation: Of course if you experience any burning or discomfort immediately wipe any excess product off your skin and dilute the area with any edible oil you have on hand. You can use any carrier oil, cooking oil you have on hand. We recommend these..
