Making Natural Soap

Making Natural Soap

What is 'Natural' Soap Yes - We make it with Sodium Hydroxide! We had a question this week from Rina asking how we can call our soap "Natural" when we use Sodium Hydroxide to make it.   What a great question ...so we thought we'd share the answer with you all. The Origin of Natural Soap Nature combining fire, water and earth's minerals It is thought that the first soaps were created when rain flooded cold cooking fires. The rain soaked though the ashes turning the water into a strong alkali...(for the technically minded this would usually be a combination of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide)...which in turn converted any residual cooking fat in the ash into soap.    Voila - a very rough form of soap was created. Cold Process Soap Making At Moon Haven we make our skin nurturing Natural Cold Process Soap in a similar but more refined fashion. Mixing Oils and Alkali Just like the first soaps...cold process soap making involves mixing natural botanical oils and fats ( eg olive, coconut oil etc) with salt water derived sodium hydroxide  (a strong alkali) and water to start a chemical reaction called "saponification." Saponification turns Oil into Soap Saponification turns the oils and fats into soap (also called a sodium salt of the oil it is derived from) , glycerin and heat! The oils, fats, and other additives like essential oils and herbs used in this process are natural, coming directly from plants or animals. Sodium hydroxide itself is a strong alkali/ base and is crucial for soap making. It helps break the strong bonds of the oils (long chain fatty acids for the technical minded) so that it can recombine to make soap. What is Sodium Hydroxide? Sodium Hydroxide is derived from natural sources. Historically it was produced from the ashes of hardwood trees. Today, it's mainly made through the electrolysis of salt water, a process that uses salt (a natural mineral) and water. In the final soap product, the sodium hydroxide has been completely used up  in the soap making process -  it is the necessary catalyst that makes oils into soap. Natural Cold Process Soap For these reasons...and more ... Cold Process Soapmaking  is  considered the only 'natural' soap making process.  It is  accepted as "Natural"  by the international organic certification organisations...and that is good enough for us!😀 This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care?

What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care?

What Happens When You Choose the Wrong Skin Care? I never thought that it would happen to me. Here I was away from Moon Haven, away from home and I had forgotten to pack my Anti Ageing Skin Care System AND my Moisture Cream with Rose Geranium. In fact I had left everything at home... and I mean EVERYTHING! So I thought-  oh well... a few days wont hurt me using something else on my skin. I couldn't have been more wrong! So off I went down to a nearby pharmacy and picked up what i thought was a good quality as-natural-as-possible moisturiser and cleanser for sensitive, dry skin.  They were a little pricey but I didn't want to compromise my skin for the sake of a few dollars. Day 1 Using the acquired skincare was ok...my skin was reasonably hydrated when I woke up that first morning. The cleanser was adequate but it did leave my face feeling a little tight.  I decided that I wouldn't use it again. At the end of the day my face felt warm, dry and uncomfortable. It was pink in places and my rosacea was starting flare. I applied more moisturiser which relieved the dryness for a few hours...but it didn't last. Days 2 and 3  I was constantly having to play moisturiser catch up with my skin.  and by Day 4 I knew that my skin was in trouble.  I woke with a pimple above my eyebrow and a painfull lump developing at the corner of my mouth. My skin was sensitised, warm to the touch and papery. I was breaking out and my skin was stressed. Thankfully, I was on my way home... and do you know what the first thing I did was? Smothered my face with Bionutrient gel mixed with our Age defying serum.  My skin soaked it up and started to relax... and even more importantly repair. Anti-Ageing Skincare System SKINCARE THAT HAPPENS WHEN WE MAKE SKINCARE FOR OURSELVES Your Price: : 100% NO-RISK MONEY BACK GUARANTEE Needless to say - the very first thing I will pack from now on is my skincare.  I don't want to go through that trial ever again. Eucalyptus Australiana Essential Oil – Uses, Recipes & More

Eucalyptus Australiana Essential Oil – Uses, Recipes & More

Eucalyptus Australiana Essential Oil – Uses, Recipes & More Eucalyptus Australiana – We love this Eucalyptus oil. With over 700 eucalypts to choose from, Eucalyptus Australiana (eucalyptus radiatia) is one of the gentlest yet most effective eucalyptus oils available. It has a softer scent than Eucalyptus globulous which can be quite overpowering and camphorous. . Being softer, this oil is wonderful for all the family from babe to frail aged and everyone in between. Helps with Respiratory Conditions Eucalyptus oil can be helpful with respiratory conditions like bouts of flu, cold and sinus conditions. Just place 4 or 5 drops into your ultrasonic diffuser or oil burner in your living spaces during the day or in your bedroom before going to sleep at night. (I wouldn’t recommend going to sleep with a candle powered oil burner as it is always unwise to leave a candle unwatched.  For this reason I always recommend one of the electric vaporisers/diffusers for use in the bedroom.) Great Gum and Spot Remover A little Eucalyptus on a cloth will easily remove the gummy residue from pricing and other stickers.  It’s also fantastic for helping to remove oil stains from clothes.  Of course it is always best to test first on an inconspicuous area of the garment to make sure the eucalyptus oil won’t react with the material. Fantastic Hand Cleaner Just mix a tablespoon of grated soap, 1/2 cup of table salt, 1 tablespoon cooking oil and 10 drops of eucalyptus oil.  Place in a jar and use a little on greasy, dirty hands as needed.  Just scrub hands with a little of the mixture working it into the and dirt.  Rinse the dirt and salt away with water. Voila! Clean hands. 5 Great Ways to Scent Your Home with Essential Oils

5 Great Ways to Scent Your Home with Essential Oils

5 Great Ways to Scent Your Home with Essential Oils From oil burners to potpourri and more! Pot Pourri – refresh with a drop of essential oil each week Potpourri One of the simplest ways to scent your room spaces is to gather together dried petals, leaves, roots, nuts and bark of plants, mix in a few drops of your choice of essential oils and place in an organza bag or bowl.  Refresh with a few drops of essential oil each week. Spray into any room to instantaneously improve the mood Room Sprays This is a fantastic way to deliver the scent that you love to the space that you are in. What I personally love about this method is that you can choose the strength of the scent by spraying more or less of the product into the air.  The effect is immediate and so are the benefits. Scented candles provide a romantic light as well as glorious scents Scented Candles Scented candles are a wonderful way to introduce a subtle scent blend to your living and sleeping areas.  Unfortunately most candles are made with fragrance oils which to my mind offer an inferior scent experience to that when essential oils are used, but they are certainly a convenient way to add both scent and light to your home. electric oil burners ..safe and simple to use Oil Burners Oil burners are a wonderful way to experience the wonders of aromatherapy at home and work. The humble essential oil burner and vaporiser have come a long way in recent years. No longer are you limited to the simple candle powered ceramic oil burner.  At Moon Haven we stock over 15 different styles of oil burner / vaporiser. From candle powered Himalayan Salt lamp burners (quite wonderful when alight) to waterless low temperature electric oil burners which offer an extremely safe and pure way to deliver essential oils into your room spaces there are a wide range o offer to suit every situation and pocket. The ultimate essential oil diffuser – safely diffuses essential oils for up to 7 1/2 hours Ultrasonic Mist Diffusers Personally this is my one true love when it comes to scenting a room.  You see Ultrasonic Mist Diffusers deliver essential oil scents into the air the way nature intended… without heat … allowing the full therapeutic properties of the oils to be experienced. At Moon Haven we have been trialling a number of these diffusers and we have finally found one that meets all of our criteria. Not only does this diffuser meet all of our safety requirements like automatic cut out when the water level drops too low, but it also offers  extended 7 hour intermittent operation or 3.5 hours of continuous scent misting.  I also love the fact that the the unit has a wonderful soft night light option which can cycle though all the chakra colours, choose one colour or if you prefer no light at all. I have been using my diffuser daily for the past couple of months and i couldn’t be more delighted. If you are interested in purchasing one here is the link to the Ultrasonic Mist Diffuser in our webstore. Moonies Love our No Residue Soap

Moonies Love our No Residue Soap

Moonies Love our No Residue Soap Cleaner Showers with Moon Haven Soap Thank you Terri and Grant for letting us know that our soaps are helping to lighten your housework load. We love getting your  feedback - especially when it reinforces why we make moon haven soap in the way that we do. NOT all bar soap leaves a mess in the shower One of the most common  objections we hear about using a bar soap is that it leaves a mess in the bathroom.  Soft sludgy left overs, soap scum on the screens and gooey messes in the soap trays. It's a hassle to keep clean. Eric & Leonie understood this when they created their soap recipes for moon haven. The "low soap scum & residue test". So they made sure that one of the critical criteria was that any soap created by moon haven had to pass the "low or no soap scum & residue test". The MH 3 Year Soap Formula And the moon haven "Three Year Soap Formula" did just that. (Yes, it took 3 years to get the formula just right!)  So thank you again Terri and Grant for sharing your love of our soapy bars.. We love that you love what we do - Thank YOU! Feedback on Our Anxiety Helper

Feedback on Our Anxiety Helper

Feedback on Our Anxiety Helper Thank you Sue - We know Leonie has spoken to you personally about your life long anxiety issues and we are just so pleased that you've found using the pule point potion so helpful. We love getting your  feedback - especially when it helps to make our moonies lives better.   Upping the Effectiveness with the Pattern Interrupt Technique (P.I.T.) Sue and Anita (see her feedback below) both use this technique to help control and reduce their anxiety levels. It's a very simple but effective technique that Leonie developed for use with our Pulse Point Potions to help calm the mind and body when experiencing stress and anxiety.  Here's what Anita had to say about P.I.T.:  "I have been using this technique since November last year with the relax pulse point. have absolutely found it has reduced my anxiety episodes. As soon as I start to feel an episode I just pull the pulse point from my bag now & I start to feel calmer. It took a little while to get into the habit of remembering to use it when I was starting to feel anxious or really stressed, but now it's just second nature. Thank you for giving me an effective strategy to combat my stress levels."  Anita Thank you Anitia...we love that you love what we do. Watch the P.I.T. video To learn more scroll down to the video on the MH Relax Pulse Point product page  This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. Helping Your Dog When Things Go Bang!

Helping Your Dog When Things Go Bang!

Helping Your Dog When Things Go Bang! This week we were asked if our  Dreamy Lavender Room Spray was suitable to help calm an anxious dog... and if lavender was toxic to our canine friends? Diffuse or Use a Room Spray to Help Calm Your Pup The short answer is that Lavender essential oil is generally considered safe to diffuse and spray into the air around dogs. In fact it is usually a wonderful assistance for helping to calm anxious pups at times of stress and concern. DO NOT INGEST BUT a word of caution though;  don't be tempted to add lavender oil to their water or  give them anything with lavender to eat as it may be  toxic to our four legged friends if ingested in large enough quantities. Fireworks - giving dogs a tough time Fireworks season is a tough time for many dogs and their owners.  In our area, the morning after a fireworks display , the community Facebook pages are full of anxious dog owners looking for their stressed out pooches. 5 Ways to Help Your Dog With another night of fireworks on its way  - here are  five ways to help dogs deal with fireworks and other anxiety raising occasions. 🐕‍🦺Prepare in Advance: Create a Safe Space: Set up a secure and comfortable area where your dog can seek refuge during fireworks. This could be a quiet room or a crate covered with blankets to reduce noise and light. Your calming presence can make a significant difference in helping them feel safe. 🐩Noise Masking: Play Soft Music or White Noise: Background noise like soft music or white noise can help mask the sounds of fireworks, reducing their impact on your dog's anxiety. 🐶Consult a Vet: Seek Professional Advice if Needed:  If your dog's anxiety is severe or if you're unsure how to help them cope with fireworks, consult your vet. The 3 Simple SkinCare Rules to Keep Your Skin Looking Its Very Best

The 3 Simple SkinCare Rules to Keep Your Skin Looking Its Very Best

The 3 Simple SkinCare Rules to Keep Your Skin Looking Its Very Best Over the past 21 years we have worked with thousands of our clients to help solve their skin care issues... and each time our advice has been the following 3 rules and our moonies tell us ... they work. 😍 Keeping your skin looking its best -  is not complicated.  1. ❤️Moisturise Morning & Night: Nurture, Protect & Replenish your skin, day and night with a good moisturiser.  A nutrient rich moisturiser will not only  provide good protection against the elements but will provide supporting nutrients to help replenish and rejuvenate your skin. 2. ❤️Cleanse Nightly: Use a skin-type appropriate cleanser that doesn't strip your skin of its natural oils nor leave it clogged and congested. (DO NOT use a foaming face wash - Ever!) And surprise, surprise only cleanse your face once per day with a cleanser...usually at night. In the morning gently wash your face with warm water -  this helps preserve the natural oils your skin has worked so hard to replace overnight. 3. ❤️Exfoliate Gently:  Lightly exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. Use an exfoliant with rounded particles (we use beautifully natural Jojoba Wax beads - gentle on the environment - wonderful for your face). Be Gentle - you are not trying to sandpaper your face... Too harsh and you skin will be undergoing repairs as you sleep rather than rejuvenating it! Essential Oil Monograph – Lemon Myrtle Oil

Essential Oil Monograph – Lemon Myrtle Oil

Essential Oil Monograph – Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil Lemon Myrtle is a true Australian.  Found in tropical Queensland, its oil has been used over the years for everything from insect repellant to flavouring for lemon cordial. Our indigenous peoples used the leaves of the tree to flavour food such as fish and meat and used the pulp of the leaves as an insect repellant. During World War II  our lemon harvest was diverted to the war effort...lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C - and so lemon myrtle was used to flavour cordial in its stead. Essential Oil Monograph Botanical Name: Backhousia citriodora Plant Part: Leaves Extraction Method: Steam Distilled Origin: Australia Description: Lemon Myrtle tree is typically grown on plantations. Colour: Colourless to very pale yellow liquid. Common Uses: An extremely potent antibacterial and germicide, Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is reputed to be a much more effective germ killer than the more familiar Tea Tree.
