As we all know oil and water DON'T mix - without a little help from a friend. The friend in this case comes from a family of ingredients called solubilisers.These substances help oils, including essential oils to dissolve in water. You can make all sorts of water based products like room sprays, skin toners, facial mists, hair mists and detanglers as well as making a bath essential oil concentrate.

I love making salt scrubs at home. Firstly they're so easy to put together. A good quality salt - finely ground is best - some low scent cooking oil and essential oils of your choice and voila - you have your very own home-made exfoliant. Salt also has deeply detoxifying properties: Its trace minerals are natural purifiers that draw out pore-clogging toxins and relieve congestion.

Frequency:  At Moon Haven we recommend that the use of the Age defying System would be beneficial for all skin types.  For those aged under 30 then once a week should be sufficient. Then as we age the frequency can be increased. For example many on their 40's, 50's and beyond get fantastic results when they use it every night.

In 1998, after many years of being unable to pinpoint the source of her debilitating muscle pain and tiredness, Leonie was finally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). This led her and husband Eric down a path of exploring the best that western medicine and complimentary therapies could offer to bring about relief. Leonie grew up surrounded by herbs and an avid interest in the formulation of skin care. Her childhood chemistry set and laboratory in the laundry, are part of family lore. Frustrated at finding little relief for her pain, Leonie started researching all things herbal and aromatherapy, discussing the issues with other herbalists and therapists and set about making a salve that worked for her. Achy Breaky Rub was born and the rest is history. Moisturising lotions that didn’t bring Leonie out in a rash, salves for the constant itch that plagued her hands and soaps that would deliver the benefits of the aromatherapy world to her on a daily basis followed. Family and friends got in on the secret and soon the kitchen was turned into a laboratory – little food could be found there, but you could bet your life you could always find a jar of herbs infusing on the bench or a pot of the latest ‘research project’ on the stove. Ideas were turned into reality, more and more products were formulated and tested on the same willing band of people. Eric, a consulting engineer and project manager, looked into the technical side of things and explored better ways of doing things. He brought both his engineering and manual craft skills to the fore and developed molds and designed methods and techniques to make things easier. Having previously been a small business owner himself, he also began developing a detailed business plan for Moon Haven. The word spread… and so Moon Haven was born. Who is Moon Haven? Aloe Vera for your sunburnt skin Unfortunately it's a fact of life. Most of us will get a touch too much sun at some point in our exitence. Burning, stinging, sensitised sunburnt skin can be so uncomfortable. Thankfully mother nature has a wonderful skin soother at hand. Aloe Vera is natures first aid for sunburn. Every household should have a plant at the ready. Just break a bit of fleshy leaf off the plant and apply the gooey inner gel from the centre of the leaf and gently smoothe it over your sunburn. Of course, do seek medical advice if the sunburn is severe or covers extensive areas of your body. After Sun Gel Of course if you don't want to go to the trouble of keeping and Aloe Vera plant you can always use our After Sun Gel. The World Health Organisation (WHO) tell us that one of the best ways to protect ourselves from contracting Covid-19 is to wash our hands with soap and water ...often! And who are we to disagree with that? (As you know, we make soap... beautiful, natural, cold processed soap) Plus in this pandemic environment our health and..dare we be dramatic and say that even our lives.. depend on it! So why is soap so effective against COVID-19? Here's what UNESCO has to say : Water alone may rinse off dirt, but viruses and bacteria are so small they often need chemical and mechanical intervention to get their sticky nanoparticles out of the crevices that make up our unique fingerprints. That’s why soap is so important. It’s made for this job. Give soap 20 seconds, at least, of thorough scrubbing and the pin-shaped soap molecules will penetrate the types of bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19, that protect themselves with an oily lipid membrane. Like a nail popping a tire, the water-repelling end of the soap molecule, a hydrophobic tail that can bond with oil and fats, stabs COVID-19 and leaves the virus a deflated and broken sack of RNA cells. And while alcohol can also break an oily membrane, washing with soap has the added benefit of physically removing even tougher to break viruses and bacteria from the skin. This is thanks to the dual nature of soap molecules. As the hydrophilic, or water-loving, heads reach out to bond with the water, the tails turn inwards to protect themselves from the water and by doing so, scoop up anything they catch in tiny soap bubble cages called micelles. Scrubbing all parts of your hands and wrists vigorously, with a sudsy lather, is key to locking these invading particles away for good - and washing them down the drain.
