Vetiver - the Oil of Tranquility

Vetiver - the Oil of Tranquility

Vetiver oil is distilled from the roots of the vetiver plant I love vetiver essential oil. It’s soft, smoky, resinous scent is so calming and grounding that I will often just open up my bottle of essential oil in the midst of the business of moon haven and take a slow, deep breath... Vetiver Essential Oil – calming, grounding and gentling The effect is almost instantaneous – a deep sense of calm and groundedness overtakes me.  My heartbeat starts to slow and I am reminded of the cool, damp earth and my connectedness with it. I use vetiver for all of these reasons and more. Vetiver helps to dispel negativity, anger and irritability.  It is also helpful for releasing grief and calming panic. It truly is the oil of tranquility. Vetiver oil is fantastic for helping with  skin issues like stretch marks and wound healing. It promotes hormonal balance and skin moisturisation. Extraction methods: The oil is steam distilled from the dried roots of the vetiver plant which is grown in Indonesia and India. Over the two year growing season the roots of this grass-like perennial can grow to 2.5 metres in length! Blends: The base note of vetiver can be overpowering so I tend to only use it in relatively small proportions. for example a lovely calming blend for the home is: 1 drop vetiver 4 drops sweet orange 2 drops clary sage 2 drops lavender The soft smokiness of the vetiver will ground this blend and carry it throughout the day… allowing the scent to linger longer in the air Start Your Journey with Vetiver This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. Moon Haven Essential Oil Uses, Dilutions and Properties

Moon Haven Essential Oil Uses, Dilutions and Properties Aromatherapy Basics What to use, how to use and why Aromatherapy has proven to be highly successful in assisting people in many situations over the ages. From relieving the symptoms of stress,  helping to calm a restless family to assisting with health issues, the ancient science of aromatherapy has proven extremely useful to millions of people around the world. Read on to find out what to use, how to use it and why we should use essential oils… Moon Haven Australia’s “Aromatherapy in a Bottle” range consists of six specialised essential oil blends, six specialised Pulse Point Potions, eight pure essential oil blends and  four massage oils.  Each has been formulated by our highly regarded clinical aromatherapists to assist with everyday issues and concerns.  We call it “Practical Aromatherapy”.   These blends have been formulated from the highest quality essentials oils in such a way as to bring the benefits of the plant directly to the consumer through the amazing science of aromatherapy. Essential Oil (EO) Dilutions – How Much Should You Use? The aromatic plants of the world have provided us with a marvellous gift for our health and well being in the form of essential oils.  While being totally derived from nature, these precious substances should always be used with due reverence. It does not necessarily follow that where a little of an oil is good, then a lot more is better!!!  For instance one drop of lavender oil on your pillow will help you relax in readiness for sleep; while applying 10 drops of the oil is liable to keep you wide awake and your brain whirring away for hours. Recommended Essential Oil and Essential Oil Blend Dilutions: For general massage and skin applications, essential oils for the body are generally used at a dilution (in a suitable base) of 2.5% and the face at a maximum of 1%. For some specific applications essential oil can be applied at dilutions of up to 10% but always refer to a qualified aromatherapist when contemplating using these higher concentrations.  As a general rule use half the above dilutions for babes, and toddlers, Suggested Essential Oil Dilutions Oil Burners and vaporisers: According to the size of the room add 6 to 10 drops to a water based oil burner or vaporiser.  If using a waterless oil burner then you may use a little less. Baths: Add 5 to 8 drops of essential oil to 1 tablespoon of milk. Pour this mixture into a warm bath for a beautiful aromatherapy bathing experience.  The milk acts as an emulsifier, mixing with the bath water so that you do not have drops of concentrated oils floating on the surface of the water. Scrubs: Add 10 to 15 drops of your selected essential oil or blend to a half cup of salt and 1 tablespoon of your base oil of choice (try almond, sunflower, grape seed or sesame). Thoroughly combine, step into your shower recess and apply to your body in a gentle circular motion.  The salt acts as a gentle skin exfoliant, the oil as a moisturiser and the essential oils bring their unique properties to your skin.  Turn on the shower and rinse off, afterwards gently pat your skin dry and apply your favourite body lotion. Essential Oil Blends: Professionally formulated by Moon Haven Australia’s clinical aromatherapists, these six essential oil blends cover a wide range of applications from a defense against illness to combating debilitating stress. Remember these concentrated pure essential oils MUST be diluted prior to use on the skin. Pure Essential Oils: Do it your way - with Moon Haven Australia’s selection of “must have” essential oils. These 8 pure essential oils form the basis of a good aromatherapy kit.  Used singly or in a complex formula these eight oils will give you the flexibility to deal with most aromatherapy situations you may encounter. Remember these concentrated essential oil blends MUST be diluted prior to use on the skin! Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil Tea Tree- Nature’s Disinfectant After Lavender, Tea tree is one of the most recognised and widely used essential oils.  With a multitude of uses it is one oil everyone should have in their cupboard. Australia’s own tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) contains at least 48 different organic compounds. Part of the magic around tea tree derives from the fact that the oil is active against all three categories of infectious organisms: bacteria, viruses and fungi. Over 48 different compounds combine to achieve this effect.  Traditionally tea tree oil, at various dilutions, has been used to treat a variety of skin, joint, and muscle conditions including acne, athlete’s foot, boils and burns, insect bites, lice, scabies, body and foot odour, vaginal infections, sinus congestion, hemorrhoids, ring worm, mouth and throat infections, herpes, warts, sprains, rheumatism, and sore muscles. Aborigines used tea tree in medicine for coughs, colds. The leaves were crushed and inhaled or soaked to make an infusion. Leaf washes were applied to pains, sores and burns. When using tea tree oil around the home, always use it diluted, otherwise sensitisation can occur.  At most we recommend 1 part tea tree to 1 part fixed oil (sunflower, almond etc) for direct application to skin. Here at Moon-Haven we use Tea Tree in many of our preparations including Universal Herbal Ointment and our rejuvenated Tea Tree-t clay based soap. Essential Oils Changed My Life

Essential Oils Changed My Life

Essential Oils Changed My Life I may sound a bit dramatic when I say that essential oils gave me back my life. But in a way it is the truth. You see in 1998, after many many years of constant pain and debilitating sleep and cognitive issues, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Western Medicine could only do so much The medical world gave me pills that dulled my senses and made the pain more tolerable but did little to make life easier. I spent much of my life in bed. There was no such thing as a social life. After my diagnosis I felt relieved that at least I knew what was wrong... but devastated that western medicine didn't have a cure. Searching for an Answer I took my search for help online. Many forms of alternative therapies beckoned but I zeroed in on the benefits offered by the herbal and aromatherapy worlds. I connected with aromatherapists and herbalists around the world asking for their advice and possible pathways towards health that I could take. Ever grateful for the help I received I am ever grateful for the help and guidance I received from these wonderfully generous and wise souls. Finding the formulations that worked for me With the information they gave me I was able to put together a number of essential oil and herbal concoctions to help me deal with the muscle and joint pain i was experiencing. (St John's Wort & Calendula Rub) a potion that helped me sleep (Deep Sleep Pulse Point Potion) essential oil blends to help my thinking become sharper. (Focus Pulse Point potion) Slowly, steadily I improved to the point I was able to work again.  Moon haven was born Moon Haven was born out of my appreciation of the natural world and my drive to share what I had learned. So for me the study and use of essential oils is not a past time but something I cannot live without. Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin

Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin

Essential Oil Dilutions - How to Use Essential Oils Safely on Your Skin Using essential oils on your skin effectively and safely isn’t difficult but it can be a little confusing. So we've put together this handy guide to using essential oils on your body. Never use undiluted essential oil on your skin First things first - ALWAYS dilute essential oils when applying them to your skin or scalp.  Undiluted essential oil on the skin can potentially cause sensitisation and severe skin reactions in susceptible people. I have known of clients who have splashed lavender essential oil around like it was a cologne only to find that at some point in time their skin starts to react, becoming sensitized or developing eczema like rashes. I have a personal theory that we all have a lifetime limit or threshold for different substances in our lives.  Once that limit has been reached then sensitisation occurs on every subsequent exposure. The key to using essential oils safely & effectively is to use the correct dilution for the person & situation Download Your Essential Oil Dilution Guide For this reason I prefer to err on the side of caution and recommend that essential oils are diluted when applied to the skin. We have written a simple essential oil dilution guide for skin applications.  Click here to get your copy Warmest regards, Leonie - moonhaven's aromatherapist, founder & creator of good things This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. Make this blend for winter warmth

Make this blend for winter warmth

Make this blend for winter warmth Leonie here, writing to you from my little formulation corner of the cottage. I've been working with our Body Rub Trio to make a really gorgeous muscle warming blend - see the recipe below. But first I want to talk about why these oils and why this blend. Sometimes Our Aching Bodies Need Comfort I'm sure you know how much I believe in the synergy of combining different natural approaches. And while our beloved St John's Wort & Calendula Rub works beautifully with its anti-inflammatory properties, sometimes our bodies need a different kind of relief - the warming, circulation-boosting power that only certain essential oils can provide. That's why I chose these three essential oils for the trio: 🔥 Ginger - The warming powerhouse (yes, it smells a bit like wet socks at first sniff 😱, but don't let that fool you - it's incredibly effective! Give it ten minutes and its true ginger nature begins to show itself. 🌿 Eucalyptus - Increases circulation and helps warming oils penetrate deeper ❄️ Peppermint - Helps distract pain receptors So now that you know why... here's the blend Warming Muscle Rub Recipe Ingredients: •    10 drops Ginger Essential Oil •    8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil •    8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil •    20ml Fractionated Coconut Oil Method:  1.    In a 20ml glass bottle, combine all essential oils.  2.    Top up with fractionated coconut oil and shake gently to blend.  To Use: Massage a few drops into affected areas as needed.  Important: Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after application - you really don't want this warming blend getting near delicate skin or membranes! Hint:  Many of our Moonies alternate between this warming blend and our St John’s Wort & Calendula Rub - the combination is incredibly effective. And of course, individually these oils are incredibly versatile. Eucalyptus is great for congestion, Peppermint for headaches and Ginger for digestive support  For me - I wouldn't be without them... I hope you get to play with these remarkable essential oils - particularly  the 'wet sock' ginger oil - it truly improves with time.  Just give it ten minutes for its true nature to show itself! From our cottage to you, with love, 🧡 Leonie (moon haven's aromatherapist & founder)  P.S. I can't stress this enough - always wash your hands thoroughly after using this rub formula. Trust me on this one! More winter wellness ideas ... This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject. How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces

How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces

How Aromatherapy Brings Calm to Chaotic Spaces We’re often asked… "Can essential oils really help settle the household when everything feels like it’s spinning out of control?” At Moon Haven, we’ve watched the transformative power of scent work its gentle magic for decades — in homes bustling with children, in workplaces brimming with deadlines, and in our own cottage store where busy minds walk in and breathe a sigh of relief. Aromatherapy, when used with intention, can truly bring calm to chaos. Here’s how: The Scent - Emotion Connection Essential oils like Lavender, Sweet Orange, and Lemongrass interact with the limbic system – the emotional centre of the brain. Just a few deep breaths of the right blend can: lower heart rate reduce cortisol levels (our main stress hormone) and restore a sense of control It’s not just ‘woo-woo’ — it’s biology. Creating Calm Zones @ Home Whether it’s toddlers melting down, teens arguing over the remote, or the grown-ups stressing over bills, every household needs a sanctuary space. Here’s how our Moonies are doing it: Diffuser in the corner: A calming blend of Lavender or Sweet Orange helps ease the mood and reset the tone of the day. Bathroom bliss: A few drops of Rose Geranium or Lemongrass Oil on a washcloth during a warm shower turns cleansing into a grounding ritual. Pillow & linen mist: A spritz of our Dreamy Lavender Room Spray at bedtime tells your nervous system, “It’s time to let go.” No Diffuser? No Worries! You don’t need fancy gear to enjoy the calming benefits: A bowl of steaming water + a few drops of Lavender or Lemongrass = instant atmosphere shift A cotton ball with a drop of essential oil tucked into a pocket or desk drawer A dab of diluted oil on pulse points (our Relax Pulse Point Potion is perfect for this) Lemongrass: Cutting Through the Clutter One of our favourites for lifting emotional fog is Lemongrass Essential Oil. With its bright, citrusy scent, it’s perfect for those moments when you feel overwhelmed and scattered. Try it when: You’ve had a tense conversation and want to reset the energy in a room The household feels “stale” and heavy (a few drops in a DIY surface spray works wonders) You need a fresh start and a mental uplift without caffeine Rituals Over Routines Aromatherapy shines when it’s woven into the everyday. It helps transform the mundane into moments of intention and care: A drop of essential oil in a warm bowl of water while doing dishes Inhaling your favourite blend before opening your laptop Breathing deeply while applying moisturiser before bed These tiny rituals anchor us and give our nervous systems a break — even if it’s just for a few seconds. Final Thoughts from the Cottage In a world that rarely slows down, the simple act of stopping to breathe in calm can be revolutionary. Whether it’s the soft embrace of Lavender, the crisp clarity of Lemongrass, or the grounding depth of Vetiver — aromatherapy reminds us that peace isn’t out there somewhere… it starts within, right under our nose. Warming Muscle Rub Blend

Warming Muscle Rub Blend

Warming Muscle Rub Blend There are two main  approaches to dealing with muscle and body pain Soothe, calm and reduce inflammation - this is the approach taken with Moon Haven's St John's Wort & Calendula Rub Counter-irritate the area, excite the muscles and in turn, confuse the pain signals in the nerves to register something other than pain. This is the way liniments and mentholated sports rubs tend to work. And we agree - there are times when a counterirritant, warming muscle rub like this can be comforting. This easy to make formulation is wonderful to use on old stubborn injuries and muscle pain. There are 3 Essential Oils that do this well: Ginger Pure Essential Oil's warming and anti-inflammatory qualities help soothe tired, aching muscles and joints. Eucalyptus Essential Oil is noted for its analgesic properties ( helps to relieve pain) , as well as for its ability to assist with congestion and respiratory issues Interestingly, eucalyptus leaves were used by indigenous Australians as a poultice to help relieve the muscle and joint pain of arthritis. Peppermint Pure Essential Oil (Mentha arvensis) is a wonderful oil to use in a muscle rub as it contains around 80% menthol. Menthol is known as a counterirritant. It works by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm. These feelings on the skin distract you from feeling the aches/pains deeper in your muscles and joints.  Combining all three essential oils into one rub makes for a very potent concoction. Here is a suggested formula to make at home. Warming Muscle Rub Blend In a 50 ml glass bottle mix: 10 drops Ginger Essential Oil 8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil 8 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil Top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil. How to use: Massage a few drops into the affected area. Apply as often as needed Don't forget to wash your hands immediately after  - You really wouldn't want any of this blend to get into and delicate areas. In case of irritation: Of course if you experience any burning or discomfort immediately wipe any excess product off your skin and dilute the area with any edible oil you have on hand. You can use any carrier oil, cooking oil you have on hand. We recommend these.. Body Rub Trio Essential Oil Pack Soothe, relax and renew 5.0 Ginger Essential Oil The oil of empowerment Eucalyptus Australiana Essential Oil The gentle eucalyptus for all the family Peppermint Essential Oil Breathe easier Fractionated Coconut Oil This article was written by Moon Haven’s aromatherapist and founder Leonie Gully and as such represents her personal opinion on the given subject.
