I remember when I was little my grandma, who lived with us, getting out the chest rub at the first sign of a sniffly nose or cough. Out would come the stay-in-bed-books and puzzles, the warm cups of milo and the jar of eucalyptus based chest rub.
I have to admit that there was something deeply comforting about its camphorous smell… it certainly cleared out the sinuses!
Now most of those old fashioned rubs were made with petroleum jelly which as the name suggests is a derivative of the oil industry. Certainly not something we would want to use on our kids or ourselves for that matter.
So for this recipe I have formulated the rub using wonderful organic unrefined Coconut Oil.
Something to note is that unrefined coconut oil is normally a solid at temperatures of 25° C or below which is ideal for the recipe.
Of course a liquid coconut oil will work just the same.
You can find jars of Coconut oil at most supermarkets – often in the health food section.
I also like to have a jar of this made up as winter begins so it is at hand as soon as anyone begins to feel unwell. The ideal jars are old cosmetic/moisturiser jars, small jam or vegemite jars etc. Just make sure you remove the label and replace it with your own.
So here it is:
Moon Haven’s Easy Chest Rub Recipe
- 20g (roughly a heaped tablespoon) Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil
- 5 drops Eucalyptus Australiana Essential Oil
- 5 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
- 3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Mix all ingredients together. If coconut is very solid warm it slightly in a small jar standing in a pot of hot water.
Pour mixture into a small container and label as Chest Rub and the date. You’ll find that this amount of rub will see most people through a nasty head or chest cold….but if not, it’s easy to whip up another batch.
Rub gently onto the chest and throat when colds and flu hit. This rub is also wonderful when rubbed into the feet for the same reason. Of course you should avoid, eyes, noses, lips and nipples and any other delicate area.
